Weighted Average

To calculate a weighted average in Excel, you can use either a manual calculation or the SUMPRODUCT formula.

Manually calculating a weighted average in Excel:

  1. Multiply each value by its corresponding weight.

  2. Add up the results of these calculations.

  3. Divide the sum of these calculations by the total weight.

Using the SUMPRODUCT formula to calculate a weighted average in Excel:

  1. Use the SUMPRODUCT formula to multiply each value by its corresponding weight and sum the results.

  2. Use the SUM function to sum the weights.

In our example we walk through both of these methods to calculate a students weighted average grade for the semester. In our example our weight is 1 (100%), but in other use cases you may need to divide by the weight!
